Health Screening dedicated to leaving no one behind in our mission for wellness and care.

In the heart of the Central Region, the Faith, Hope, and Love (FHL) Group Africa, a social enterprise focused on advancing quality healthcare including capacity building for young people in underserved communities using innovative and right-based approaches, joined the ABSA Risk Assurance to organize a transforming community event. The Ayikuma M/A School and its surrounding community were touched by an inspiring initiative: the ‘Sustainability and Health Outreach.’ The school grounds buzzed with activity, marking a day of empowerment, education, and enhanced well-being.

In a world increasingly aware of the threats posed by global warming, promoting sustainability has become paramount. The two organizations understood this urgency. Their joint effort aimed not only to mitigate environmental impact but also to bolster healthcare access, uplift educational opportunities, and instill a passion for reading among the students in Ayikuma.

The objectives were clear, and the teams were resolute in their mission to reach over 100 school pupils in an engaging reading session, fostering a love for books and encouraging good reading habits. The day kicked off with an interactive reading session facilitated by ABSA’s Risk Assurance Team. The session was not merely an educational exercise; it was a bonding experience. ABSA team members read alongside the students, creating a unique atmosphere where learning felt like an adventure. Books were donated, enriching the school’s library and promising endless opportunities for young minds.

The event also included a sustainability talk and a clothing distribution initiative. Community members gathered in large numbers, embracing the spirit of togetherness. A talk on environmental sustainability and good hygiene practices raised awareness about sustainable living, leaving the community better informed and inspired.

Personal hygiene discussions and mentorship sessions, conducted by FHL Group Africa with final year students, added a touch of personal development to the day’s activities. The mentorship session shared life experiences and valuable learning habits, encouraging the students to dream big and work diligently towards their goals. More than 100 community members were provided with pre-loved clothing, a gesture that extended far beyond material value, warming hearts and spreading smiles.

Empowering tomorrow’s leaders: A mentoring session with students

A health screening session, thoughtfully integrated into the outreach program, catered to over 120 individuals. FHL Group Africa worked with the Youth Action Movement (YAM) with resources from the +1 Global Health Fund to ensure a successful screening process to serve the community effectively. This session identified health concerns and offered valuable guidance and support. The health screening session, a pivotal component of the outreach, addressed diverse health needs within the community. Conducted with precision and care, the session included tests for blood pressure, weight, height, and BMI, as well as screenings for diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B. The health team not only identified health concerns but also provided tailored medical and nutritional advice, particularly focusing on managing blood pressure issues faced by the older population. Akua, a 16-year old, expressed gratitude for the screening, acknowledging that it revealed her Hepatitis B status. She shared, “I am so grateful for this screening exercise; otherwise, I would not have known my health status. Honestly, I am a bit sad about the results, but the health provider reassured me that it can clear on its own if it is not chronic. The provider stated that the condition can also be managed with medications upon further tests that needed to be carried out. I was referred for further tests.”

Capturing the collaborative spirit: A snapshot featuring the ABSA, FHL Group Africa, and YAM Accra Team in action.

As the day concluded with scenes of smiles, togetherness, and shared dreams, the teams from ABSA and FHL Group Africa left Ayikuma, knowing that their efforts had sowed the seeds of positive change. The possibility of revisiting Ayikuma for continued services or even establishing a local health centre or mobile clinic was recommended. Additionally, implementing mentorship programs within the school could have a profound impact on the youth, providing them with the guidance, support, and opportunities they need to shape a brighter future. The community’s assemblyman expressed gratitude for the screening initiative that benefited the community significantly. With the nearest health facility over an hour away, community members rarely went for check-ups until their health conditions worsened. The screening initiative provided a vital service to the community.

In the heart of Ayikuma, a chapter of hope was written. ABSA and FHL Group Africa exemplified the power of collective action, proving that with dedication and compassion, communities can thrive, and a better future can be envisioned for all.
