Artist statement
The physical manifestation of the unimportant, but not necessarily the intangible concepts of emotions is what I describe as Abstract art. It is these intangible and internal ideas and feelings that I explore in my painting. Creating by paying attention and noticing the particular. I discover my inspiration in nature, and the universal rhythms of life. Particularly living in a mountainous area and having the pleasure of appreciating numerous sunsets day-in day-out, makes me adore the idea of using “objects” as metaphors for deeper truths. The shape, line, and patterns observed in nature, as well as the narrative they convey, captivates me. Not the obvious one that describes an item, rather the narrative that illustrates the intangible. Spontaneity is one of the defining characteristics of my work and the initial marks on the canvas are gestural, connecting action with emotion as in lyrical dance or music. The composition evolves as I work, building layers over the textured surface and using color to create a sense of depth. I consider my paintings to be an invitation for every viewer to delve deeper than the surface of color, texture, and shape in order to discover fresh perspectives on who they are and the world around them.
